A young woman (Julianne Hough) leaves her home after being shown in possession of a bloody knife. It is seen moments later buying a bus ticket, with hair already cut and bleached, and stops at a small town called Southport, North Carolina. At the local store, she introduces herself as Katie. After acquiring a job as a waitress and buying a small house on the outskirts of the city, Katie befriends her neighbor, Jo (Cobie Smulders) and meets Alex Wheatley (Josh Duhamel), the manager of a local mini supermarket, and his two children, Lexie and Josh. Alex's wife tragically died of cancer a few years earlier.
Alex immediately likes Katie so she leaves an old bicycle at home. After a good time together, they fall in love. Lexie immediately accepts Katie, while Josh initially resists, but finally accepts her. Meanwhile, Kevin Tierney, a Boston police officer, searches for Katie and, using her authority as a police officer, sends reports that say she is a wanted killer. Seeing her picture at the police station, Alex confronts Katie and gets angry because she didn't trust him enough to tell her his real name, Erin. Kevin's boss takes away his badge by skipping several rules, noting that he always carries a bottle of water that turns out to be full of vodka, and reveals that Erin was Kevin's wife.
